Visa-Free Travel for Indians

A destination described as visa-free may still require an arrival form, travel authorisation, confirmed accommodation, funds or an onward ticket. Start by identifying the exact entry category, then verify it with the destination authority.

Understand visa-free, visa-on-arrival and e-visa travel for Indian passport holders, with practical checks to complete before booking.

01

Visa-free, visa on arrival and e-visa are different

Travel lists often combine three different entry systems. That can make a passport look more powerful while hiding the work a traveller still needs to complete.

  • Visa-free

No visitor visa is normally obtained before travel, but border entry conditions still apply.

  • Visa on arrival

Permission is requested at the port of entry and may involve a fee, form, photograph or supporting documents.

  • Electronic visa or authorisation

An online approval must usually be obtained before boarding, even when no embassy appointment is needed.

Visa-free country directory for Indian passport holders

The Ministry of External Affairs lists the following 27 destinations under visa-free entry for ordinary Indian passport holders. We have separated destinations with standard border checks from those that have an extra eligibility rule, travel authorisation or other important caveat.

Six checks to complete before buying tickets

  • Passport validity

Check the destination rule and make sure there are enough blank pages.

  • Permitted purpose

Visa-free tourism may not permit work, study, business activity or long stays.

  • Length of stay

Confirm whether the limit is per visit or calculated across a rolling period.

  • Arrival formalities

Look for digital arrival cards, travel authorisations, fees or health declarations.

  • Supporting evidence

Carry accommodation, onward travel, insurance and funds if required.

  • Transit rules

A connection through another country can create a separate transit-visa requirement.

04

Use official destination information

The Ministry of External Affairs publishes a visa-facility table for ordinary Indian passports, but states that its information is sourced from public and external sources and may not always be accurate. Use it as a starting point, then check the destination immigration authority, embassy or consulate and confirm airline transit requirements separately.

Quick answers

Frequently asked questions

Does visa-free mean guaranteed entry?

No. Border authorities make the final entry decision and may ask for evidence of your visit, funds, accommodation and onward travel.

Can I work in a visa-free country?

Usually not under visitor entry. Work, study and residence normally require the correct permission before travel.

Should I book a non-refundable ticket first?

Confirm the current entry and transit rules before making non-refundable arrangements.
